The Indian Detours were established by the Fred Harvey Company in 1926 to promote travel between Harvey Hotels across the southwest when passengers departed from an Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe train. Headquartered in Santa Fe, Indian Detour cars and buses headed out for one to ten-day “cruises” across the Four Corners states.

The Chili Line was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad’s narrow-gauge route from Antonito, Colorado, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It operated along its 125-mile route from 1880 to 1941. Travelers today can track this route from the train station in Antonito to the water tanks at Tres Piedras and Embudo, to the station in Santa Fe which is today’s Tomasita’s Restaurant.

While the Chili Line took passengers to Santa Fe, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad’s main destination was Durango, Colorado to reach the mines at Silverton. The line between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico has been restored and is operated today by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. From Chama, travelers today can drive the abandoned roadbed to Durango, and this historic book illustrates the journey.

New Mexico played an extremely important role in World War II railroad operations, as its diverse population kept Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe trains running across the state, carrying troops and war materials. Photographer Jack Delano of the Office of War Information photographed these operations in 1942, and his photos are featured in this book, as well as the author’s photos retracing the route across the state today.
